Netgear XAV2001
$60.00
Released September, 2004
The Pros:Integrates smoothly within existing network configurations - natively supports Linksys routers, offering one-step connectivity. LED notifiers remove connection guesswork - speed meter is especially helpful for optimizing operation speeds. Netgear phone support service is quick and reliable - very helpful for inexperienced users with minimal networking knowledge.
The Cons:Instructions are poorly written and confusing - inexperienced users may require professional assistance. XAV2001 only contains a single unit, when 2 are required to establish a connection - many users are better off purchasing the XAVB2001 combination package.
Like its peer from another manufacturer (the Linksys PLE300), Netgear's XAV2001 Powerline AV 200 Adapter aims to solve the problem of creating an ethernet network while minimizing the cost of ethernet lines.

In this case, all it takes is two adapters to plug into a home's existing powerlines to set up a highspeed network capable of transferring data at 200 mbps. One adapter is plugged into an outlet and a router; the other can be plugged in anywhere in the house and offers a single Ethernet port for any Ethernet-enabled device to be plugged into. With more adapters, more devices (such as Blu-Ray, HDTVs, gaming consoles, computers or laptops) become part of the network and can share printers, documents, storage, movies, games, or streaming HD video. A button at the side of every XAV2001 offers easy setup of AES 128-bit security encryption. Unlike its predecessors (the Netgear XAV101 or XET1001), it offers compatibility with Mac OS X as well as Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Included in the package are a 1 year warranty, Ethernet cable, and Setup CD.
